The Chey Institute for Advanced Studies held the 2026 Science and Technology Innovation Committee Summer Workshop in Jeju from August 20 to 21, under the themes “AI: From Digital to Reality” and “Scientists and Technologists: Shaping Society.”

DAY 1 – AI: From Digital to Reality

The first day explored how AI is transforming real-world industries and research, including semiconductors, robotics, and drug discovery. Professor Jung Ho Ahn of Seoul National University and Professor Changhwan Shin of Korea University discussed the AI semiconductor ecosystem and competitiveness, drawing on discussions from the Committee’s study group. Professor Kyu-Jin Cho of Seoul National University examined the potential and challenges of humanoid robots and highlighted the need to build on Korea’s strengths in hardware and manufacturing. Professor Woo youn Kim of KAIST introduced the changing landscape of scientific research through AI Scientists, while Sunghee Yun, CEO of Erudio Bio, shared his experience applying AI in real-world settings, from semiconductors to biomedicine. In the evening, Professor Hyuncheol Kim of Yonsei University examined the potential impact of AI on labor markets, healthcare, and education, highlighting the gap between technological advances and institutions.

DAY 2 – Scientists and Technologists: Shaping Society

The second day focused on the broader social impact of science and technology and the role of scientists and technologists in shaping society. Hee Hwang, CEO of Kakao Healthcare, explored how digital healthcare is transforming medical practice, while Professor Seok Joon Kwon of Sungkyunkwan University emphasized the growing importance of verification alongside knowledge production in the age of AI. Professor Kyung Ryul Park of KAIST highlighted the importance of capabilities, markets, and institutions in ensuring that new technologies are successfully integrated into society.
