U.S.-China–Korea Trilateral Conference: Northeast Asia in Transition

Chey Institute for Advanced Studies (CHEY) held its inaugural conference entitled “Northeast Asia in Transition” on February 14-15, 2019 to celebrate its launch. The conference was made up of five open sessions and two closed sessions. A total of 35 participants – thirteen from the US, seven from China, and fifteen from South Korea – joined the in-depth discussion on security, economics, scientific, and technological dimensions of the Northeast Asian region.

Session and Lectures

  • The plenary session attended by a panel of Sohn Jie-ae (Professor, Ewha Womans University), Cho Hyun (First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs), Harry Harris (US Ambassador to the ROK), Edwin Feulner (Founder, Heritage Foundation), Kurt Campbell (Chairman, The Asia Group), and Jia Qingguo (Professor, Peking University) focused on the US-China competition, North Korean nuclear issue, and the future of the US-ROK alliance.

  • The Session One entitled “A New Cold War at the Crossroads” focused on three main issues: future of the US-China relations; escalating tension in the Asian region due to the US-China competition, especially surrounding the hotspots – Korean Peninsula, East China Sea, and South China Sea; and new operating system for the Asia-Pacific region to avoid a Cold War between the US and China.

  • The Session Two entitled “Finding a Solution or Freezing the Status Quo?” zeroed in on the Korean Peninsula and looked at the pertinent issues: expectations from the Hanoi Summit; future of the US-ROK alliance, nuclear non-proliferation, and the effectiveness of economic sanctions.

  • The Session Three entitled “From Trade War to Technology Hegemony?” explored the effects and implications of the US-China trade war and economic competition on the world trade regime. The session also looked at the World Trade Organization (WTO) reforms.
