Application Guidelines

  • Eligible Applicants

    • Individuals currently employed at overseas universities or research institutes (Korean nationals excluded).
  • Qualifications

    • Faculty members, researchers at overseas universities or research institutions holding a doctoral degree (including postdoctoral researchers)

    • Applicants must, in principle, be no older than 50 years of at the application deadline

    Applicants must be able to conduct research in English and should not have any health issues that could hinder their research activities

    Those not eligible include:

       - Individuals whose prime interest is to teach in Korea
       - Korean citizens
       - Individuals currently residing in Korea or conducting research in Korea
  • Fields of Research

    • Applications are open to all academic disciplines, including but not limited to the following

    • Humanities & Social Sciences

      Economics, Business Administration, Political Science, Public Administration, Law, Sociology, Education, Psychology, Anthropology, Media & Communication Studies, Geography, History, Philosophy, Literature, etc.

    • Information & Communication

      Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Communication Engineering, Computer Science, etc.

    • Life Sciences

      Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Ecology, Immunology, Genetic Engineering, etc.

    • Energy

      Petrochemistry, etc.

  • Application Procedure

    • Confirm Eligibility

      Review the eligibility requirements on the website.

    • Online

      Email Authentication

      Access the application page (www.chey.org - Global Exchange - ISEF - Apply – Application).

      Enter your email to receive a temporary password (valid only during the application period). This can be updated when completing the application form.

      Complete the online form with required details and submit your research proposal.

    • Online

      Submission of Supplementary Documents

      Upload all required documents and request recommendations from referees.
      At least one recommendation must come from a source not affiliated with the applicant’s home institution.

    • Selection

      Applicants will undergo a preliminary screening followed by a comprehensive review.

  • Details of Financial Support

    • Research Stipend
      3,500,000KRW/Month
    • Publication Support
      1,000,000KRW (one-time, awarded upon submission of Final Research Paper)
    • Publication Incentive
      $2,000~$5,000 (for articles published in journals indexed in SSCI, AHCI, or SCI)
      $1,000 (for articles published in journals registered with the National Research Foundation of Korea)
    • Settlement Support
      1,000,000KRW (one-time)
      Round-trip Airfare and Medical Insurance provided

    Publication incentives are available for articles published within 2 years of the official completion date of the fellowship, provided that the publication includes the following acknowledgment: “This work is supported by the Chey Institute for Advanced Studies’ International Scholar Exchange Fellowship for the academic year of 2026–2027.” The amount will be determined after careful evaluation of the journal’s impact and the fellow’s level of contribution.

    Failure to enter Korea within one month of the recommended entry date set by the Chey Institute will result in the forfeiture of the monthly research stipend for that period.

    For postdoctoral researchers, a one-year extension may be granted upon review.

  • Research Period

    • 1 Year
      September 1 - August 31 of the following year
    • 6 Months
      September 1-February 28 of the following year
      March 1 – August 31
  • Obligations

    • Submission of Initial Research Report and Interim Progress Reports

    • Submission of Final Research Paper
