Eligible Applicants

  • University faculty and institution researchers from eligible countries who have a doctoral degree
  • European/American postdoctoral researchers in science field (newly added)
  • Applicants, in principle, must be 50 years old or younger at the period of application deadline
  • ※ Applicants must be able to carry out research in English and should not have any health issues that might hinder their research activities
  • ※ Those not eligible:
  • Persons whose prime interest is to teach in Korea
  • Korea citizens
  • Candidates who have resided or conducted research in Korea for 3 years immediately preceding their application submission date

    Receive temporary password that can only be used during the application period (temporary password can be modified).

    Fill out application and submit a research proposal.

    Upload required documents and request recommendation letters.

  • Undergo Application Review

    Review process includes 1) review of research field and 2) overall review.

  • ※ If you have received confirmation from the host institution in Korea, please attach the host-agreement letter when applying. Once accepted, you must contact the scholar from the host institution and receive the institution's formal confirmation.

Application Deadline

  • Submission : Early November – Mid February
  • Result : Early April

Financial Support

  • Research Grant (includes living expenses) : Monthly stipend of 3,500,000 KRW
  • Publication (one time payment) : 1,000,000 KRW (following the submission of final research report)
  • Publication Incentives : 2,000~5,000 USD (if published in SSCI-, AHCI-, or SCI-indexed journals), 1,000 USD (if published in the National Research Foundation of Korea-indexed journals)
  • Settlement Expenses (one time payment) : 1,000,000 KRW
  • Round-trip Airfare (economy class), Medical Insurance
  • ※ Publication incentive will be provided for articles published within 2 years of the date of the Fellow's return to his/her country. The article must indicate that the research was funded by the ISEF program. Incentives may vary depending on the journal's influence and the writer's level of contribution.
  • ※ Research grant will be provided upon the condition of the Fellow arriving in Seoul within a month of the suggested arrival date.

Research Period

  • 1 Year : Sept. 1 – Aug. 31 of the fellowship grant year.
  • 6 Months : Sept. 1 – Feb. 28 or Mar. 1 – Aug. 31 of the fellowship grant year.
  • For post-doctoral researchers, a one-year extension is possible after evaluaion.

Fellowship Requirement

  • Produce interim progress reports and a final research report.
