On September 29, 2025, the Chey Institute and the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies co-hosted Science+α Talk 〈SF, Robot, Human〉. Intelligent robots are swiftly transitioning from fiction into reality. This talk explored two questions: How can science fiction inspire scientists to pioneer new robotic forms? How will human-like robots affect our self-perception? Kim Joohyung (Professor, UIUC), formerly a Disney Research fellow, presented research unveiling unexpected functional merits found in SF-inspired robotic platforms. Kim Youngjae (Sr. Research Fellow, LG Electronics), a robot engineer driven by philosophical questions, argued that with AI-powered machines destined to surpass human capabilities, free will remains a mysterious yet vital frontier that distinguishes humanity from the machine. The Q&A session was moderated by Kwak Jae-Sik (Professor, Soongsil Cyber University), a prolific science fiction author bridging the technical and narrative worlds.
